UNC Basketball: Tar Heels reach out to Matthew Mayer
Armando Bacot is not the only one from the UNC basketball program recruiting Baylor standout Matthew Mayer to Chapel Hill.
Baylor standout Matthew Mayer is still deciding on his future plans.
Although he recently entered the transfer portal, Mayer is working out in Chicago as he’ll go through the NBA Draft process. Even though his future is still up in the air, it hasn’t stopped college programs from contacting him since he entered the portal.
According to Jeff Goodman of Stadium, the UNC basketball program is among the teams that have reached out to Mayer. This shouldn’t be a surprise, given that Tar Heel standout Armando Bacot hasn’t been shy about recruiting him via social media recently.
If Mayer decides to return to the college ranks for one more season, there will be plenty of teams vying for his services. With most of Hubert Davis’ team returning, a player like Mayer could be just what the Tar Heels need in order to make another deep NCAA Tournament run.
We’ll have to wait and see if Mayer believes that it’s time for him to make the jump to the professional level. Regardless of how it shapes up, Mayer’s decision will have major implications for the UNC basketball program moving forward.
If he heads to the NBA, Davis and his staff will look elsewhere to fill their open scholarship. In the event that he returns to college, the Tar Heels will be more than ready to make a huge push to bring Mayer to Chapel Hill.
