UNC Basketball: Kerwin Walton enters transfer portal
After deciding to test the NBA Draft waters, UNC basketball guard Kerwin Walton has also decided to enter the transfer portal.
A few days ago, Kerwin Walton of the UNC basketball program decided to go through the NBA Draft process to get some feedback on his game.
Now, it appears that Walton’s time in Chapel Hill is coming to an end.
According to reports, Walton has entered the transfer portal. As May 1 is the deadline for players to enter the portal, Walton has made a last-minute decision to leave North Carolina.
After having a solid freshman season in which he showcased his three-point shooting ability, Walton struggled throughout his sophomore campaign. The Hopkins, Minnesota native went from being a starter who couldn’t be removed from the floor given his offensive talent to a player who had a hard time sneaking into his new coach’s rotation.
In 31 games played, Walton averaged 3.4 points on just 37.3 percent shooting from the floor. He saw a decrease in minutes (down from 21 to 13.3) and points (8.2 to 3.4) per contest.
If Walton decides to leave the UNC basketball program, it will officially open up a scholarship for the Tar Heels to work with. Although they would have liked to have had it open up sooner (given that most of the top players in the transfer portal have committed elsewhere), North Carolina will still have time to figure out how they wish to utilize the scholarship moving forward.
Although things didn’t pan out for Walton in Chapel Hill, he will now have the opportunity to find a new home where he can potentially regain the value that we saw him have during his freshman season as a Tar Heel.
