In UNC football recruiting news, one-time Michigan commit Joel Starlings has announced the final five teams involved in his recruitment.

Four-star defensive lineman prospect Joel Starlings was once verbally committed to the University of Michigan. After re-opening his commitment back in mid-January, Starlings is still in the mix as a UNC football recruiting target.

Starlings has narrowed his recruitment down to five programs. The Richmond, Virginia native is still considering the Tar Heels along with Oklahoma, Virginia, West Virginia and South Carolina.

According to 247 Sports Composite, Starlings is considered as the No. 4 overall prospect out of the state of Virginia. He is ranked as the No. 33 overall defensive lineman prospect in the Class of 2023.

It may be a while until Starlings makes a decision, given that he has official visits scheduled through mid-October. However, his official visit to Chapel Hill is in the near future, as he’s expected to visit the University of North Carolina from May 20-22.

The 6-foot-5, 310 pound defensive lineman spoke about his recruitment, as he stated that it wasn’t a tough decision to narrow his options down to five schools.

"“It was pretty easy to get to these five schools. All five have pretty much what I am looking for and all five of them are pretty ideal. …I am probably going to decide at the end of November.”"

When asked about his five finalists, Starlings had some pretty good things to say about the Tar Heels:

"“The coaches are really cool. Coach (Tim) Cross, the defensive line coach, we talk a lot. And coach Mack (Brown), we talk a lot as well. I am building a good relationship with the coaches.”"

As Mack Brown and his staff continue to build a relationship with Starlings, the hope is that they will eventually earn a commitment from the standout defensive lineman. Given the fact that he’s in no rush to commit once again, the Tar Heels will have plenty of time to prove to Starlings that Chapel Hill is the place for him.
