UNC Basketball: Tar Heels reach out to top transfer guard
The UNC basketball program has been in touch with one of the top guards available in this year’s transfer portal.
At the current moment, the UNC basketball program does not have an open scholarship to offer any potential transfer options.
However, that has not stopped Hubert Davis and his staff from exploring possible additions that could make an impact on the program.
According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, the Tar Heels have been in contact with SMU transfer guard Kendric Davis. North Carolina is among a list of over 20 schools that have contacted the reigning AAC Player of the Year since he entered the transfer portal earlier this week.
Davis, a 6-foot guard from Houston, Texas, has been one of the most productive point guards in the entire country. As a junior, Davis averaged 19.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 4.4 assists while shooting 37.2% from beyond the arc, leading the Mustangs to a 24-9 record.
The Tar Heels’ interest in Davis seems to be a contingency plan if Caleb Love decides to enter the NBA Draft. If Love returns, Davis doesn’t seem to be a real possibility for the UNC basketball program, but if he decides to leave, the Tar Heels could be a very enticing landing spot for the standout transfer.
In fact, Isaac Trotter of 247 Sports listed the Tar Heels as one of the best fits for the prized SMU guard.
"North Carolina: Hubert Davis and the North Carolina coaching staff know what they’re doing. Every good staff has backup plans. Davis is a super talented player, but let’s be real, this feels a lot like a backup plan in case Caleb Love opts to go to the 2022 NBA Draft. If Love leaves, North Carolina would have a very enticing sell for Davis. North Carolina’s backcourt would feature two Davis’ (Kendric and R.J.) and they’d give teams fits. Plus, Armando Bacot is back too, so North Carolina could be primed for another deep March run."
Of course, a lot of this rides on the major decision that Love is expected to make over the next week to two weeks. If Love does decide his time in Chapel Hill is over, Davis could be brought in as an immediate starter alongside another standout Davis (R.J.), as the duo would create a nightmare matchup for opposing backcourts.
North Carolina certainly has aspirations of making another deep NCAA Tournament run next season. With some uncertainty surrounding the future of the roster, it makes total sense that Hubert Davis and his staff are looking at every potential option that may be able to help them improve the roster moving forward.
