UNC Basketball: Dawson Garcia enters transfer portal
Dawson Garcia will not be returning to the UNC basketball program, as he’s reportedly entering the transfer portal.
It was certain that roster decisions were coming as players from the UNC basketball program have spent time contemplating their futures.
While it’s reported that the four starters who still have eligibility remaining are still deciding on their future plans, one player decided that it’s time for him to explore other options.
Early Wednesday morning, it was reported that Dawson Garcia has entered the transfer portal. This will be the second time that the 6-foot-11 forward will enter the portal, as he transferred from Marquette to North Carolina prior to the start of the 2021-2022 season.
When the Tar Heels earned a commitment from Garcia, the versatile forward was expected to play a major role in Hubert Davis’ rotation. However, Garcia’s time with the program certainly didn’t go as planned.
The Lake, Minnesota native appeared in just 16 games for the Tar Heels, as he averaged 9.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while shooting over 40 percent from the floor. He was a starter for the Tar Heels until he suffered a concussion against Boston College on January 2, and then things seemed to take a turn for the worse.
After missing two games due to the injury, Garcia returned to play off the bench for the Tar Heels following two contests. Seeing just 33 minutes of action combined, little did we know that it would be the last time that Garcia would suit up for the Tar Heels during the 2021-2022 campaign.
On January 24, the program announced that Garcia would return home to Minnesota, as his family was dealing with medical concerns. Just a few weeks later, North Carolina stated that Garcia would not return this season due these reasons, which led many to believe that his time in Chapel Hill was most likely over.
This decision shouldn’t come as a surprise, given that Garcia elected to be closer to home. As he re-enters the transfer portal, he could look to explore his NBA Draft possibilities once again, or can look for a new home closer to where his family resides.
Either way you look at it, Dawson Garcia’s time in Chapel Hill was rather disappointing. Given how talented he is and knowing how much of an impact he could have had on this year’s team, Garcia could’ve helped provide some much-needed depth that the Tar Heels would’ve benefitted from during their run to the national title game.
We knew decisions were on the way, as this is the time where players begin to state their future intentions. The first domino has officially fallen, now we wait and see what comes next for the UNC basketball program.
