UNC Basketball: Caleb LOVES to play in the second half!
UNC basketball standout Caleb Love has made a name for himself by putting together some rather impressive second-half performances.
As the old saying goes, “Legends are made in March.”
Caleb Love is quickly becoming a UNC basketball legend with his standout performances throughout this year’s NCAA Tournament. The sophomore guard put together another legendary-type performance en route to leading the Tar Heels back to the national title game.
Beating rival Duke is always a big thing for North Carolina, but spoiling Coach K’s farewell tour for a second time? Well, that’s the type of stuff that makes you legendary!
Love didn’t have a very good first half, which seems to sometimes be a trend for the talented guard. However, with the Tar Heels needing him the most, Love stepped up to the occasion.
After just six first-half points, the St. Louis, Missouri native went off over the final 20 minutes of play, scoring 22 to finish the night with a game-high 28 points.
There are a few shots in UNC basketball history that stand out among the rest. When asked about big moments, you think of Michael Jordan’s game-winner and Luke Maye’s shot against Kentucky among a handful of others. A shot that Love took in the Tar Heels’ Final Four win over the Blue Devils certainly made its case to be added to the mix.
With North Carolina up one with under 30 seconds to play, the Tar Heels had a chance to seal the deal. The very confident Love was up for the challenge, as he pulled up from three at the top of the key and absolutely drained the shot.
If you’re looking for the iconic photo of the shot, look no further:
Love has averaged 20 points over the Tar Heels’ five NCAA Tournament contests. The sophomore guard has two 25+ performances in his last three contests and will look to add one more as the UNC basketball program squares off with Kansas in Monday night’s title game.
Of course, there are times when Tar Heels fans question why Love takes certain shots- it comes with the territory of a player of his style. However, when he gets on a roll, he’s a very difficult matchup for opposing teams.
When he gets going offensively and his confidence is sky-high, there’s simply no slowing him down.
Dating back to last season, we already knew that Caleb Love absolutely loves competing against Duke. In what might ultimately be his last game against the Blue Devils (if he does declare for the NBA Draft), his final performance against them will be one that will be remembered very fondly in UNC basketball history.
