UNC Basketball: A new competitor in the G.G. Jackson sweepstakes
Fans of the UNC basketball program may not want to hear this latest update regarding the recruitment of five-star standout G.G. Jackson.
Well… the information on the G.G. Jackson recruiting process keeps on coming in.
Even though Jackson originally released his list of “finalists,” it’s possible that the five-star prospect from the Class of 2023 may re-evaluate that list in the near future.
On Saturday afternoon, Jackson posted on Twitter that he received an offer from the University of Massachusetts. Of course, you may be saying to yourself, “why would such a high-profile prospect even consider a program like UMass?”
It’s simple: Frank Martin.
We know how heavily Martin recruited Jackson while he was at the helm at South Carolina. In fact, all signs were leaning towards the Columbia, South Carolina native committing to the Gamecocks.
Once Martin was relieved of his duties, the program’s recruitment of Jackson, the No. 8 ranked player in the Class of 2023 according to 247 Sports, took a major hit. Jackson even stated in a recent interview that things changed drastically once Martin was not with the program.
Now, with Martin leading UMass, the former South Carolina head coach is looking to rekindle his relationship with Jackson in hopes of adding him to his new program.
This is not great news for Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels, as it looked like Martin’s presence wasn’t something they had to worry about anymore in this recruiting race. Now with his new program back in the mix, it’s very possible that Jackson will take some extra time to evaluate all of his potential options.
If you need any indication as to how Jackson is feeling about the offer, his Twitter feed has multiple tweets that reference the UMass offer.
The above tweet, one that Jackson retweeted from The State’s Lou Bezjak, references how Martin is not quite done recruiting one of the top players in his class. Although his program is a bit different, Martin hopes that the relationship that he’s built with the Jackson family will be enough to lure him to UMass.
Buckle up, we might be in for a bumpy recruiting ride…
