A UNC basketball recruiting target was scheduled to make his college decision on Friday, but that’s been put on hold.

Class of 2022 prospect London Johnson was set to make an official announcement on Friday afternoon regarding the next step in his basketball career, but that has now been pushed back to Wednesday, April 13.

That’s when Johnson, a four-star point guard and consensus top-50 recruit in his class, will announce his decision between Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, North Carolina, USC, and Virginia. It’s really unclear at this point who the frontrunner for Johnson’s commitment is, or if there even is a frontrunner, as the majority of his recruitment has remained very quiet from a public perspective.

A 6-foot-4, 165-pound senior from Norcross High School in Norcross, Georgia, Johnson is the No. 24 prospect in the 2022 class according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s sixth among players at his position and third in the state of Georgia. He’s ranked similarly in both the Top247 and the Rivals150 at 30th and 27th, respectively. He sits slightly lower at No. 38 in the ESPN100.

Although the Tar Heels’ backcourt is currently occupied by sophomores R.J. Davis and Caleb Love, we don’t know how much longer that will be the case. We expect Davis to stick around for at least one more season, but I wouldn’t bet on Love returning to campus next fall.

Fellow four-star point guard and class of 2022 prospect Seth Trimble is already committed to North Carolina, and current freshman guard D’Marco Dunn is also waiting in the wings. That could potentially cause a logjam in the UNC backcourt, particularly if Love stays in college another year.

I assume that Johnson has to be taking all of this into consideration, and it’s plausible to think that the uncertainty revolving around UNC’s roster next season could have something to do with the delay in Johnson’s announcement.

I honestly don’t expect Johnson to commit to North Carolina, but I’m trying to look at it from all angles. I still believe he’ll likely end up in Charlottesville with Tony Bennett and the Virginia Cavaliers, but we’ll have to wait at least another 12 days to find that out.
