According to recent social media data, America seems to be rooting for the UNC basketball program in this weekend’s Final Four.
America is rooting for the UNC basketball program in the Final Four?! According to recent social media data, this appears to be the case.
On the map below, we’re sure you’ll be happy to see that it is filled with a lot of Carolina blue.
The map above is based on geotagged Twitter data that was collected since the matchups were set on Sunday evening. Over 200,000 tweets were tracked for this project.
To get the information, trends software are used that have direct access to geotagged Twitter data to track fans’ hashtags in each state. For example, the hashtag #GoHeels was among the ones that were tracked by the company over the last few days.
Once the data was collected, it was found that the UNC basketball program had a rather significant edge over the other three Final Four squads.
Based on the data, here’s the number of states that are vying for each remaining program:
North Carolina- 21 States
Duke- 16 States
Kansas- 8 States
Villanova- 5 States
After the majority of America was rooting for St. Peter’s to defeat North Carolina to continue their Cinderella run to the Final Four, it appears as if now the country has changed its mindset on the Tar Heels.
With the Peacocks out of contention, a good portion of America is rooting for the UNC basketball program to defeat Duke and once again play “spoilers” on coach Mike Krzyzewski’s farewell tour.
As the Tar Heels have made what many view as an improbable run to the Final Four, social media has been buzzing about the team’s recent success. Hopefully, the UNC basketball program can continue its run while adding even more fan support across the entire country.
