Hubert Davis will now join an exclusive group of people who have both played and coached in the Final Four.

What a year it’s been for Hubert Davis!

Taking over for the legendary Roy Williams as the UNC basketball program’s head coach, we all knew that Davis had some big shoes to fill. Having played for the program, Davis was tabbed as the right guy for the job, as Williams determined that he has what it takes to carry on the program’s historic tradition.

Well, based on his first season at the helm, is it too early to say that Williams was right?!

The Tar Heels faced a ton of adversity this year, as many people around the college basketball world questioned this team as a whole. Davis also took a lot of heat, as all eyes were on him throughout his first season leading the program.

Although the odds were stacked against them, they continued to fight, becoming one of the hottest teams in the country en route to their first Final Four bid since 2017.

This Final Four trip is truly a testament to what a tremendous job Hubert Davis has done. As he leads the Tar Heels to New Orleans, he’s on the verge of making history.

Davis becomes the sixth different Tar Heels coach to reach the Final Four, tying Kansas and UCLA for the most by any program. He also becomes the first head coach to reach the Final Four in his first season since none other than Bill Guthridge, who did so with the UNC basketball program back in 1998.

To add to these accolades, Davis will become just the second person EVER to play and serve as a head coach in a Final Four. The other is Dick Harp, who played for Kansas in the 1940 Final Four while leading the Jayhawks to the same spot as the head coach of the program in 1957.

This is a special moment for the UNC basketball program and an even bigger one for their first-year head coach. As someone who loves the University of North Carolina as much as Hubert Davis does, he continues to show why he was, in fact, the right man for the job.
