In the first round of March Madness, UNC basketball head coach Hubert Davis picked up another milestone first victory in his young head coaching career.
Throughout his first season as the head coach of the UNC basketball program, Hubert Davis has picked up some milestone “first victories.”
First win overall as a head coach- CHECK
First win in Chapel Hill- CHECK
First win on the road- CHECK
First win in ACC Play- CHECK
First win against (and AT) Duke- CHECK
Now, we can add another first to this list.
In his first NCAA tournament contest at the helm, Davis and the Tar Heels put together a dominating performance against No. 9 seed Marquette. The win gives the rookie head coach his first win in the March Madness tournament.
Throughout the 2021-2022 season, Davis got a lot of heat for some of the performances that his Tar Heels put together. He especially has taken a lot of heat for his small rotation use, as fans have clamored for some players to see more game action.
Of course, there have been ups and downs, as every team goes through, but based on how the season has gone, Davis has definitely grown as a head coach over the span of time.
Not only did North Carolina knock off Duke in their final regular-season game, they also won 20+ games, secured a double-bye in the ACC tournament, and earned a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament (one in which a few bracketologists.. cough Jerry Palm… didn’t even have them making).
With Roy Williams stepping down as the team’s head coach, it was certainly a transition for the long-time assistant coach to take over the reins. If you had any doubts about Davis’ coaching ability, just look at the Tar Heels’ second-half stretch.
Based on what we’ve witnessed, this Hubert Davis guy seems to be developing into a rather good head coach, and North Carolina is hopeful that this is the first of many tournament victories for their new leader.
