March Madness has arrived and the UNC basketball program is an 8-seed in the NCAA Tournament. Has this seeding been a favorable one for the Tar Heels in years past?

Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball program have some prior experience as a No. 8 seed in the annual NCAA Tournament.

In this year’s tournament, the Tar Heels are once again in this position, marking the fifth time in program history that they have been a No. 8 seed. It also marks the second consecutive season in which the tournament committee placed North Carolina in this same spot, and ties the lowest seeding that the program has ever received.

For those of us (cough, me) who dig into past history to try and make correlations to the future, just how has North Carolina fared while holding this particular seeding?

The UNC basketball program has an overall 7-4 record as a No. 8 seed. They have made two Sweet Sixteen appearances and made a trip to the Final Four once in this spot.

If you’re looking for more details on each of the four instances, look no further than right here! We’ll begin with the 1990 team, as there’s a distinct connection between that squad and this year’s group.
