Armando Bacot is officially the record holder for the most double-doubles in a single season by a UNC basketball player.

Move over Brice Johnson, there’s a new record holder in town!

With his 10-point, 11 rebound performance in the ACC Tournament victory over Virginia, Armando Bacot recorded his 24th double-double of the 2021-2022 season, breaking the UNC basketball program’s single-season record.

Going into Thursday’s quarterfinals, Bacot was tied with Brice Johnson (2016) for the record. Given that the junior big has been a double-doubles machine, it should be no surprise that Bacot broke the record with some time to spare.

It’s been a career year for the Richmond, Virginia native, as he leads the Tar Heels in points (16.4), rebounds (12.8), and blocks (1.8) per game. He was the lone Tar Heel to earn All-ACC honors (first or second team) and finished second in the ACC Player of the Year voting.

Bacot is not done, as the Tar Heels still have plenty of work to do. The question remains: how much will Bacot distance himself from Johnson on this list?

North Carolina is guaranteed at least one more ACC Tournament game (hopefully two!), and an additional tournament game (most likely in the NCAA Tournament). If the Tar Heels go on a run (and Bacot continues to play at this high level), it’s very possible that he could end the season with anywhere from 26 to 28 double-doubles, which would give him a comfortable cushion on the Tar Heels leaderboard.

Of course, we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, but it would be nice to see how much Bacot could tally onto his newly-set record. As nice as the record is, I’m sure that Bacot’s only focus is on finding ways to help the UNC basketball program continue to win games.
