Is it possible that former UNC football standout Mitchell Trubisky might reunite with former offensive coordinator Brian Daboll in New Jersey?

As we inch closer to the start of the NFL free agency period, the quarterback position has been the main topic of discussion.

We’ve seen a handful of transactions so far, such as Aaron Rodgers’ massive extension, the Russell Wilson trade to Denver, and the most recent trade of Carson Wentz to Washington. These moves are just the beginning of what should be a crazy start to the offseason.

These moves will certainly impact a duo of former UNC football quarterbacks. Sam Howell is going through the NFL draft process, and his potential landing spots will alter a bit after these moves. Mitchell Trubisky will also be impacted, as he’s set to hit the free-agent market.

The former Tar Heel standout is said to have a lot of free-agent buzz, as there are executives around the league that believe he deserves another chance at being a starting quarterback. However, could Trubisky’s next landing spot come with a familiar face as his head coach and a quarterback competition as well?

Reports are surfacing that the New York Giants are expected to make a run to sign the former UNC football quarterback. The Giants are just one of a handful of teams that are projected to be in the mix for Trubisky’s services.

There are a few reasons why this connection makes sense:

For starters, the Giants organization went through a front office/coaching overhaul, as Joe Schoen was tabbed as the team’s new general manager while Brian Daboll was brought in to take over as head coach. Both come from the Buffalo Bills, the team that Trubisky played for during the 2021 season.

During an appearance on the Adam Schefter show, Trubisky went into detail about his connection with Daboll and the possibility of signing with the Giants:

"“I think of Coach Daboll right away because of my connection with him in Buffalo. I’m excited to see what he does in New York, really. I don’t know where I’m going to go, but I know whatever he does there, he’s going to do a great job with that offense. He’s a great leader of men. He’s just real and authentic with all the guys, and I think that is why so many people respected him in our building. So I’m excited to see what he’s going to do.And then, of course, New York, you think of the city. I haven’t been to New York that many times, but you think of big New York City and the Giants. So I know Coach Daboll will do a great job, and I’m excited to see that offense.”"

Along with his prior connections to Schoen and Daboll, Trubisky would provide competition with Daniel Jones, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Given that this regime didn’t draft Jones, they may be looking for potential competition to see what they have in their inherited quarterback.

However, the Giants are strapped for cap space, and may not be able to afford to sign Trubisky. Additionally, the former No. 2 overall pick may have options available that give him a better opportunity to start, which will be very enticing for the former UNC football signal-caller.

Based on the quarterback movement so far, it’s safe to say that we’re far from done with regards to transactions at this position. As the dominoes continue to fall, we’ll have to wait and see where Trubisky fits into the puzzle.
