Skyy Clark, a former UNC basketball recruiting target, has decommmitted from the University of Kentucky. Will the Tar Heels jump back into his newly opened recruitment?

Well, this was certainly unexpected.

After committing to Kentucky back in November, Skyy Clark, a five-star point guard prospect, has decided to reopen his recruitment. In a formal announcement, posted on Twitter by Joe Tipton of On3Sports, Clark stated that he has officially asked Kentucky for his release.

This news came out of nowhere, but it is a rather interesting development. Clark, who is viewed as the No. 27 ranked prospect and the fifth-best point guard prospect in the Class of 2022 according to 247 Sports, will now be looking for a new landing spot.

How is UNC basketball recruiting impacted by this news?

Well, prior to committing to Kentucky, the Tar Heels, along with UCLA and Memphis, were the final four programs in contention to land Clark. Do these programs now have an upper hand in his newly-opened recruitment?

It remains to be seen whether or not the Tar Heels will pursue him once again. Caleb Love’s status moving forward is still in doubt, as he could elect to stay another year or pursue other options. Additionally, North Carolina already has another point guard in Seth Trimble coming into the mix, and still will likely have R.J. Davis back in the fold.

Of course, we saw this year how the Tar Heels lacked front-court depth, so maybe they will make another push in Clark’s recruitment.

Although there is not a ton of information out there regarding why Clark decided to reopen his recruitment, this is a very interesting development that should be monitored over the next couple of weeks. It will remain to be seen whether the UNC basketball program becomes players in the Skyy Clark sweepstakes once again.
