UNC Softball: Donna Papa records 1,300th win as a Tar Heel
The legendary UNC softball coach has added yet another milestone to her already illustrious resume.
Donna Papa has been a staple in the UNC softball program since she took over the program back in 1986. Now, in her 37th season at North Carolina, Papa continues to add to her illustrious coaching career resume.
With a 7-3 victory over Villanova, Papa earned her 1,300th career victory at North Carolina. The 65-year-old continues to climb up the head coaching wins leaderboard, as she recently passed DePaul’s Eugene Lenti for eighth on the all-time list.
Papa’s career has been remarkable. Here are some of her notable accomplishments so far as the head coach of the UNC softball program:
-Five-time ACC Coach of the Year
-NFCA Hall of Fame (inducted in 2012)
-Five ACC regular-season titles
-2001 ACC Tournament title
-14 NCAA Tournament appearances
-10 players with 14 All-America honors
-11 ACC Player/Pitcher/Rookies/Defensive Player of the Year
The Tar Heels have posted a winning record in 30 of her previous 36 seasons at North Carolina and put together 14 40-win seasons during that time. In 2008, the UNC softball program put together a 50-12-1 campaign, which included an ACC regular-season title.
Donna Papa’s resume speaks for itself, as the legendary head coach continues to make a tremendous impact on the UNC softball program. Although the 1,300-win plateau is a great accomplishment, we’re sure that Papa is envisioning a lot more wins for her program moving forward.
The UNC softball program is back in action on Saturday, as they’ll host Oregon for a one-game non-conference tilt. First pitch in Chapel Hill is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. EST.
