After taking a chance on himself last season, former UNC football standout Mitch Trubisky may have earned another opportunity to be a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Mitch Trubisky’s time in Chicago certainly didn’t go as planned.

The former UNC football standout and No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft did not live up to expectations, as his stint with the Bears organization only lasted four seasons. Of course, Trubisky wasn’t fully to blame for the Bears’ struggles, but his overall play was one area that stood out as an area of concern for the front office.

Last season, Trubisky hit the free-agent market. The former Tar Heel could’ve signed with an organization that was looking for a quarterback competition during training camp, but instead, decided to sign with the Buffalo Bills.

Yes, Trubisky was aware that the Bills had blossoming star Josh Allen under center. Even under these circumstances, Trubisky decided to sign in Buffalo and serve as a backup for a season, a move that now looks like it will pay off for the former UNC standout.

According to insider Jordan Schultz, Trubisky is a player that has drawn a lot of free-agent buzz so far this offseason. With a handful of teams in need of a starting quarterback, Schultz notes that the Commanders, Steelers, and Saints are among the teams that have some measure of interest.

The Bills also are still interested in retaining the 27-year-old, as they loved having him in the mix. However, it’s reported that several executives believe that Trubisky is once again viewed as a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Along with his initial tweet regarding Trubisky’s status, Schultz added an additional tweet citing some of the things that are trending in his favor:

For starters, Trubisky is still very young. He’s an above-average athlete and could thrive in the right system. Schultz also mentioned how many people around the league credit former Bears coach Matt Nagy as the main reason for Trubisky’s lack of development. It’s quite possible that Nagy didn’t fully tap into his young quarterback’s potential and didn’t put enough effort into helping him grow and develop.

Additionally, last season, most of which was spent on the sidelines, helped give the former Tar Heel a different perspective. While surrounded by a winning culture, Trubisky learned more about how he could prepare and what he needed to work on to improve. Having this time should greatly impact him wherever he decides to go next.

We all thought that Sam Howell would be the only former UNC football quarterback we’d be discussing over the next couple of weeks. However, keep an eye out for news on Mitch Trubisky, as his free agency storyline will certainly be an interesting one to follow.
