UNC Basketball: Armando Bacot named ACC Player of the Week for third time

UNC basketball big man Armando Bacot has accomplished something that no other ACC player has this season.

Armando Bacot has had a tremendous season for the UNC basketball program. As good as the junior big man has been throughout the first few months, he arguably had his best overall week of the season in the Tar Heels’ previous two victories.

In wins against Louisville and NC State, Bacot averaged 20 points and 16.5 rebounds while shooting an astounding 81 percent from the floor. His performance during this span once again earned him ACC Player of the Week honors.

The Richmond, Virginia native becomes the first ACC player to win the award on three separate occasions this season, and the first Tar Heel to accomplish the feat since Luke Maye back in 2018.

One of the most impressive bits of information regarding Bacot’s player of the week awards is that they all came during the Tar Heels conference season. In games that mean a little bit more to the Tar Heels, Bacot has certainly risen to the occasion.

Needless to say, Armando Bacot should be on a very shortlist of candidates for the ACC Player of the Year award. In fact, based on the overall resume, you could make the case that the junior big man should be the front-runner to take home the hardware.

Currently, Bacot leads the ACC in field goal percentage (.591), rebounding (12.5), offensive rebounding (3.7), and double-doubles (22). He is also sixth in scoring (16.3) and blocked shots (52).

In addition to that, no UNC basketball player has ever put together a season in which they averaged higher scoring and rebounding averages, field goal percentage, and blocked shots in a single season. In fact, only Tim Duncan had better numbers in each statistical category, dating back to the 1996-97 season.

We could sit here all day and break down why Armando Bacot is deserving of the recognition he is receiving. He is very worthy of the Player of the Week honors and is making a very strong case to be considered not only among the best in the ACC but throughout the entire college basketball world.
