Only one UNC basketball recruit ranks among On3’s top-50 Class of 2022 prospects.

Fans of the UNC basketball program beware… you may not like what you’re about to read.

Recently, On3 released their consensus top basketball recruit rankings for the Class of 2022. Of the top 50 players listed, only one is a future Tar Heel.

Seth Trimble comes in at No. 37 on the list, as he jumped 28 spots on the list since their last rankings release. If you expand to their top 100 rankings list, two other future Tar Heels join the mix, as Jalen Washington and Tyler Nickel are viewed as the No. 58 and 88 prospects respectfully.

Of course, having three top 100 players in a recruiting class is a good thing for a college basketball program. However, it’s not ideal when your biggest rival is dominating the recruiting class rankings.

On3 Consensus ranks Kyle Filipowski, Dereck Lively II, and Dariq Whitehead as three of the top four recruits in the Class of 2022. All three players are, of course, heading to Durham.

Overall, Duke has five of the top 100 ranked players on the list, all of which are among the 51 best players in the class. Mark Mitchell (No. 22) and Jaden Schutt (No. 51) are the other future Blue Devils listed, as five of the team’s six overall commits are viewed as top-tier commits.

Even with coach Mike Krzyzewski retiring at the end of the season, the Blue Devils have not missed a beat on the recruiting trail. Future head coach Jon Scheyer has spearheaded the program’s recruiting over the last few seasons, so just because there’s a coaching change doesn’t mean that they’ll slow down in regards to getting commitments from some of the top high school players out there.

Rankings don’t necessarily translate to wins. However, this is a trend that has been consistent over the last few years. Duke does a tremendous job at luring in the top high school talents, while North Carolina has struggled in that aspect.

Needless to say, North Carolina is a Blue Blood program, and essentially needs to step up its recruiting game in order to keep up with the likes of Duke and Kentucky on the recruiting trail.
