After the UNC basketball program celebrated “Roy Williams Day,” sophomore guard Caleb Love discussed his relationship with his former head coach.

Now that he’s retired from coaching, Roy Williams has been seen at many UNC basketball games this season, including most of (if not all) the team’s home contests.

His seat in the Dean Smith Center has changed, as he’s gone from the head seat on the bench to one that is located near the area where the Tar Heels enter the court from the locker room.

Although his location in the arena isn’t quite the same, it doesn’t stop his former point guard from acknowledging his presence.

If you watch the above video, you’ll see that Caleb Love is the last Tar Heel to emerge from the tunnel. Before he takes the court with his teammates, Love always makes sure to acknowledge his former coach by high-fiving on his way past, which has now turned into a pre-game ritual for the duo.

After the Tar Heels celebrated “Roy Williams Day” on Saturday afternoon, Love was asked by reporters about his relationship with his former coach. The now sophomore guard spoke highly of Williams and expressed what type of relationship the two share.

Love truly appreciates everything that Williams did for him during his freshman year on campus. Even though he’s not with the team on a daily basis anymore, you get the sense that Williams is still a strong figure in Love’s life, as the coach who helped lure him to Chapel Hill continues to be one of his strongest supporters.

This example goes to show you just what type of coach Roy Williams was. Beloved by his players, Williams went above and beyond to create a lifelong lasting relationship with each and every player that wore a Tar Heel uniform.
