The UNC basketball program is facing an important moment here in their 2021-22 season after losing by 30 to Miami on Tuesday. The Tar Heels hit the road on Saturday to take on a good Wake Forest team, hoping to get back on track.

But when the Tar Heels hit the court on Saturday night, they will do so without guard Anthony Harris, and that will be the case for the rest of the season.

After missing the past few games, the school announced on Friday that Harris will be unavailable to play in games the rest of the 2021-22 season. He will continue to practice and participate in other team activities.

That’s a big piece off the bench for the Tar Heels to lose as they hit the final month or so of the Atlantic Coast Conference season.

The redshirt sophomore appeared in 15 games for UNC this season, averaging 2.6 points in 11.8 minutes played per game. He’s missed the last two games for the Tar Heels against Georgia Tech and Miami.

Head coach Hubert Davis released a statement on Harris’ status:

“Anthony has worked hard to become a valuable contributor to our team,” says Carolina head coach Hubert Davis. “We are disappointed for Anthony and our team, but he will continue to contribute and we know he will work hard so he can play for us again next season.”

Harris committed to UNC as a four-star recruit in the 2019 class. While he didn’t earn a lot of playing time early on, Harris suffered a torn ACL injury in December of 2019, playing just three weeks with the team. That injury sidelined him until January of 2021 where he came back and earned his way back into the rotation a bit.

The guard will be able to still stick around with the team but it is a loss in terms of having a guard to come off the bench and give both Caleb Love and R.J. Davis a bit of a break.
