The UNC basketball program benefitted from a stellar performance from sophomore guard Caleb Love in their first game of the new calendar year.

It’s always great to ring in a new year on a good note, and that’s exactly what the UNC basketball program did on Sunday afternoon.

Behind a strong team performance, the Tar Heels went into Boston College and defeated the Eagles in blowout fashion. With the win, North Carolina now has 10 wins under their belt early on this season.

Of course, when many guys contribute at a high level, it’s very, very difficult to pinpoint one as our “Tar Heel of the Game.” However, one player did stand out a little more than the others, as his strong start to the second half propelled him to be the first Tar Heel to receive the award in 2022.

Caleb Love had a good first half, as he put together 11 points through 17 minutes of play. He was very active passing the basketball, as although he was credited with no assists through the first 20 minutes of play, he helped set up some quality looks for his teammates.

It wasn’t until the second half began until Love really showed his presence. With the Tar Heels already holding a commanding lead, Love knocked down four shots, three triples en route to a game-high 22 point performance.

From watching the game, it felt as if Love’s three-point shots served as the final dagger in the Tar Heels blowout victory. Even with Boston College looking to make a push early on in the half, Love’s strong shooting kept the deficit too insurmountable for the Eagles to overcome.

There is a correlation to make note of between Love’s high-scoring output and the Tar Heels’ overall success. The sophomore guard has now scored 20+ points in seven games throughout his Tar Heel career, and his team is still undefeated in all of those contests.

Simply put, this Tar Heels team is much better when Love and fellow backcourt member R.J. Davis perform at the level they are capable of. Moving forward, the UNC basketball program will certainly be hopeful that Love, along with the rest of the Tar Heels, can continue to play like they did against Boston College.

Love is now our “Tar Heel of the Game” recipient for the fourth time this season. He now passes fellow co-captain Armando Bacot for the team lead.

Will Love add to his total, or will another UNC basketball player earn the “Tar Heel of the Game” honors on Wednesday at Notre Dame? You’re just going to have to check back with the Keeping It Heel Team to find out!
