Jacolby Criswell and Drake Maye

We’re so used to (and simply spoiled) watching Sam Howell on a weekly basis. However, his time in Chapel Hill is very likely close to over, so it’s time that we start taking a look at the future of the quarterback position for the Tar Heels.

With Howell out due to injury, Criswell was given the nod as the team’s starter against Wofford. The sophomore from Morrilton, Arkansas was solid throughout, completing 11 of his 19 passes for 125 yards. Criswell also showed off his ability to run, as he rushed the ball five times for 66 yards and a score.

Mack Brown’s plan was to play two quarterbacks on Saturday, as true freshman Drake Maye was inserted into the game to begin the second half. In his first legitimate action as a Tar Heel, Maye showed flashes of why North Carolina is so high on his potential.

The Charlotte, North Carolina native completed seven of his 9 passes for 89 yards. Maye connected with tight end Kamari Morales for a 4-yard score to mark his first passing touchdown as a Tar Heel.

Not only did Maye impress with his arm, but he also showed off his ability to run the ball. Maye ran the ball four times for 38 yards, including an 18-yard scramble, which showed fans that the true freshman is more than just a pocket passer.

Overall, you have to be impressed with both quarterback’s performances. Over the next few months, the quarterback competition between these two players should be a very intriguing storyline in Chapel Hill.
