Cam’Ron Kelly

The Tar Heels defense faced a tough task, as they were challenged with slowing down Sam Hartman, a quarterback who is considered among the best in the entire nation.

Hartman often doesn’t make many mistakes, but Cam’Ron Kelly made the talented quarterback pay on two separate occasions.

The Junior from Chesapeake, VA hauled in two interceptions, both while the Tar Heels were trailing. The first led to a Sam Howell touchdown which gave North Carolina the lead, while the other set up the Tar Heels to tie the game two plays later early on in the fourth quarter.

Coming into the contest, Kelly had two interceptions during the 2021 season. In this game alone, the defensive back doubled his amount, and made some Tar Heel history in the process.

Kelly’s four interceptions is the most by a Tar Heel in a single season since M.J. Stewart hauled in four of his own during the 2015 campaign. Over the next couple of weeks, Kelly will have the opportunity to add to his total.

The old saying “being in the right place at the right time” fits Kelly well in this contest, as his two interceptions were certainly turning points in this game. Without those plays, you could easily make the case that the Tar Heels do not end up winning the game.
