Sam Howell

It could just be me, but I often ask myself the question: “Where would this Tar Heels team be without Sam Howell?” Quite frankly, I don’t even want to know, but I surely am happy that he’s under center for this team.

With the lights shining bright in South Bend, Howell put together a standout performance against the Fighting Irish. The junior quarterback completed 24 of his 31 passes for 341 yards and a score, and also managed to lead the Tar Heels in rushing with 101 yards on the ground and another touchdown.

Although the UNC football program finished on the wrong side of the scoreboard, Howell added to his resume as one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever wear the Carolina blue uniform.

With his 442 total yards of offense, Howell eclipsed the 10K total yards mark. It only took the Indian Trail, North Carolina native 33 collegiate contests to accomplish the feat.

Additionally, Howell became the school’s all-time touchdowns responsible for and career passing yards leader. After Saturday night’s game, Howell now has 101 career touchdowns that he is responsible for, as he will use the rest of this season to pad his newly-acquired lead.

Move over T.J. Yates, as Howell is now the school’s all-time passing leader. What’s amazing about this accomplishment is that Howell has played in 12 fewer games than Yates did during his Tar Heel career, and there’s a very good chance he’ll never suit up for North Carolina 45 total times in his career.

On a historic night for Howell, the only disappointment was that the Tar Heels couldn’t come up with a victory. Even though the season hasn’t gone in their favor, make sure you continue enjoying watching Sam Howell on a weekly basis, we most likely will only have a few more games with him as the Tar Heels’ quarterback.
