Sam Howell

Sam Howell took his fair share of hits against the Hurricanes. A ton of those hits were hard-hitting ones, the type that make you question whether or not the player would end up getting up on his own power. However, the hits kept coming, and Howell kept pushing through.

Although he only threw for 154 yards, it was Howell’s rushing attack that paid dividends for the UNC offense. The junior quarterback rushed 17 times for 98 yards and two scores, and would’ve been well over 100 yards rushing if it weren’t for a handful sacks that lost him a chunk of yardage.

On the Tar Heels’ final score of the afternoon, this Howell scramble was one that definitely deserves some attention:

Even though he was hit hard by three defenders, Howell put together a pinball-like effort to find the end zone. The touchdown was huge, as it ended up being the turning point in the game.

With his four touchdowns on the game (two passing, two rushing), Howell tied the school record of 99 career touchdowns. His next one will give him the school record, which he currently shares with Marquise Williams.

The skeptics can say what they want about Sam Howell, but you have to really think where this Tar Heels team would be without him. Even with sub-par offensive line play and a cast and crew around him that isn’t nearly as deep as a year ago, the Tar Heels’ leader on the field continues to find ways to produce, even if those ways make us hold our breath to make sure he’s ultimately okay after every big hit he takes on.
