Cedric Gray

It’s a second week in a row that Cedric Gray starts our helmet sticker honorees. The sophomore from Charlotte, North Carolina had an even better performance this week, as he earned the first two interceptions of his collegiate career.

With the Tar Heels up 21-10 at the time, Gray hauled in his first interception of the afternoon, setting his team up with great field position deep inside Hurricane territory. The Tar Heels would extend their lead on the ensuing drive, which at the time made it feel as if North Carolina was ready to put the game out of reach.

However, the Hurricanes had other plans, as they cut the lead to just three. Miami made one last attempt to tie the game or take the lead, but Gray and the Tar Heels defense had other plans.

Teammate Jeremiah Gemmel tipped a pass, which gave Gray the opportunity to haul in his second interception. The turnover secured the victory for the Tar Heels, as the defense was able to come together for a huge final stop.

Gray became the first UNC football player to have two interceptions in a single game since Myles Wolfork accomplished the feat against South Carolina in 2019. Additionally, the sophomore linebacker recorded six total tackles (five solo), and also recorded a pass breakup.

The Tar Heels defense has definitely had some shaky moments, but you have to give credit to Gray for back-to-back standout performances. As he continues to develop, Gray has shown that he has the makings of being a true matchup nightmare for opposing offenses.
