Our UNC basketball player previews continue on with a legacy Tar Heel in Creighton Lebo, son of North Carolina record-holder and current assistant coach, Jeff Lebo.

The 2021-22 season brings a few changes for the North Carolina Tar Heels. The first change is the passing of the torch from retired head coach and Hall-of-Famer Roy Williams to current head coach Hubert Davis. Another change was the addition of former UNC basketball player Jeff Lebo, who became an assistant coach for the team. Lebo played for the Tar Heels from 1986 to1989.

Jeff Lebo’s son, Creighton, has been a coach’s son for many years. The 2021-22 season marks his sophomore campaign for the Tar Heels. This is the first season in which two generations of Lebos will be on the Tar Heels’ roster.

Season Review 2020-21

Last season, Lebo shot 75 percent from the field, and averaged 0.9 points and 0.3 rebounds per game. He played in seven games with an average of 1.6 minutes of playing time. Despite minimal stats, there is a lot more to Lebo than his namesake. Watch high school film on Lebo and you’ll notice the nice touch that he has on his jumper. As cliche’ as this sounds, he plays similar to his father. The only thing holding Lebo back is opportunity, that due to the great deal of talent on UNC’s roster.

What to Expect in 2021-22

Lebo is a cerebral player. His father has prepared him for this moment his entire life. As a coach’s son, Lebo has a leg up on his teammates in regards to the system at Carolina. Having his father on the coaching staff will assist in his growth as a basketball player, and in building his own legacy at UNC.

I expect Lebo to be ready when his number is called. He will have a hard time cracking the rotation, though, since he plays behind Caleb Love, R.J. Davis and Anthony Harris. Despite limited playing time last season, Lebo showed a great deal of poise while running the point guard position. He’s a true student of the game.

Bold Prediction

Lebo will have his chance to make a name for himself. UNC head coach Hubert Davis comes from a lineage of coaching that believes in large rotations and playing time for many. Although Lebo will be a role player at the moment, who knows what his future holds as a Tar Heel? Kevin Salvadori, Dante Calabria and Pat Sullivan represent several players who worked their way from role player to prominent roles at UNC.
