Find out what four-star running back George Pettaway had to say regarding his recent commitment to the UNC football program.

Mack Brown and the UNC football program landed another big recruit last week, as George Pettaway announced that he will be taking his talents to Chapel Hill.

Pettaway was one of the most highly sought-after running backs in his recruiting class. Currently ranked by 247 Sports as the best running back in the state of Virginia, Pettaway narrowed his recruitment to four schools — Oregon, Florida, Penn State and UNC — before ultimately deciding to commit to North Carolina.

For the first time since he announced his decision, Pettaway opened up as to why he chose the UNC football program. His decision was based on more than just the sport of football.

"“I was looking for an education first,” Pattaway said. “I was looking for a great bond and family atmosphere. I was looking for how they would treat my family off the field, not just visiting. And then a great football program that likes to win.”"

For the Tar Heels, Dre Bly played a major role in Pettaway’s commitment. The current senior at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy mentioned the relationship that he’s developed with Bly over his recruitment process.

"“He’s a funny dude. He’s from the 757, so he’s done it here. We just had a great relationship off the field, just being able to talk about whatever. He always keeps it honest with me.”"

Not only did Pettaway build a bond with Bly, but he also made a quick connection with one of his future teammates as well. Current Tar Heel Tony Grimes worked out with Pettaway while the two were in Virginia, and Grimes’ father, Deon Glover, was also in attendance for Pettaway’s commitment. Of course, Glover was spotted wearing all Tar Heels gear in anticipation for the big decision.

Before he makes his way to Chapel Hill, Pettaway still has some work to do on the high school football field. Currently, the NSA Saints are 3-1, as their senior standout running back has led the way with 749 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. He also has eight catches for 203 yards and additional two scores on the year.

Thinking of his team first, Pettaway made his commitment date during the team’s bye week to ensure that it wasn’t a distraction. Now with his decision out of the way, Pettaway has visions of leading his current team to a strong finish prior to making his way to Chapel Hill.

From what started as a dream is quickly turning into a reality for George Pettaway, and it appears as if he is ready to take on the challenge.

"“To do it here, where I’ve basically been to school my whole life, and all the work I’ve been put through it’s like a dream come true.”"
