UNC Baseball: Matt Harvey winless in last 5 starts
Along with his current team, the Baltimore Orioles, the month of August was not a good one for former UNC baseball standout Matt Harvey.
Matt Harvey put together an impressive month of July, a stretch in which you could make the case that the former UNC baseball standout was trending in the right direction.
After being roughed up a bit in his first start of the month against the Toronto Blue Jays, the 32-year-old followed up with three straight victories. In those starts, Harvey averaged six innings per contest and did not allow a run in that span.
Harvey carried his scoreless innings streak into the month of August, but unfortunately, the month was not as friendly to the former Tar Heel as the previous one was.
Since the month of July ended, Harvey is winless over his last five outings. The right-hander has allowed three or more runs in four of his last five starts, and posted a 6.12 ERA for the month of August.
Now, let’s not pretend that Harvey was the only Orioles player struggling. As an organization, the Orioles lost 19 consecutive games from August 3-24, as they mightily struggled in a stretch in which they faced off against their American League East Division foes. When the franchise looks back on the 2021 season, August is a span of time in which they would most certainly like to forget.
For Harvey, it’s important that he bounces back throughout the remainder of the regular season. As he’s due to hit the free agent market once again this offseason, the player formerly known as “The Dark Knight” will have to prove that he still can be a capable starting pitcher at the big league level.
