UNC Basketball Alumni: Danny Green reportedly had ‘big market’
By Zack Pearson
Former UNC Basketball standout Danny Green returned to Philadelphia on a two-year deal in NBA free agency and it was a move that was a little shocking to some.
Just months ago Green didn’t have the nicest comments about playing in front of 76ers fans this season, hinting that he might not be back for another stint with the team. But then, it was announced that Green would be returning and joining the team for hopefully another run at the playoffs.
However, Green did reveal something interesting in his press conference on Thursday which was his first media availability since re-signing. Green did say that he had a “big market” but there was one reason why he couldn’t sign elsewhere according to All76ers:
"“The market was kind of strange. A lot of people wanted me, but they didn’t have the space or money for it,” said Green.Sign-and-trades were the common theme of this free agency, and Green was almost a part of one as well. He said that teams tried to negotiate a similar type of deal with Daryl Morey. Among the teams Green mentioned were the Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls, and Golden State Warriors."
It’s also been revealed that Green had former teammates trying to recruit him places including Dwight Howard to Los Angeles and George Hill to Milwaukee among other teams.
But in the end, Green ends up staying in Philadelphia as he looks to help the 76ers get over that hump in what should be a very interesting season, especially with Ben Simmons rumors swirling.
Green is entering year 13 after spending four seasons with North Carolina and capping it off by winning a national championship in 2009. The veteran is averaging 9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game in his career. In 2020-21, he averaged 9.5 points per game while shooting 40 percent from the three-point line.
