UNC football standout linebacker Jeremiah Gemmel has earned some well-deserved preseason recognition, and was recently named to another award watch list.

Another day, another award watch list that senior linebacker Jeremiah Gemmel has been named too.

After recently being named to the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list, the UNC football standout has also been named to the Dick Butkus Award watch list. Gemmel is one of 52 players to be nominated for this preseason recognition.

The Butkus Award is one of the most elite individual honors that college football has to offer. Named after College Football and Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus, the award is presented annually to the top linebacker in the nation.

Not only is Gemmel viewed as one of the top returning defensive players in the country, he is highly regarded among his linebacker position.

The Newnan, GA native returns to Chapel Hill for his senior season, where he will look to anchor a Tar Heels defense that has the potential to be a very good overall unit. If his last two collegiate seasons are any indication of what to expect, Gemmel should be in store for another standout season for Mack Brown’s defense.

Expectations are very high for the UNC football program, and a few of the Tar Heels major contributors have received preseason recognition. However, Gemmel, along with quarterback Sam Howell, seem to be getting the most attention, as you can most certainly make the case that they are the two most valuable pieces to this year’s Tar Heels squad.
