The UNC Basketball program will take on a reigning NCAA semifinalist in this year’s CBS Sports Classic.

As we inch closer to the start of the 2021-22 college basketball season, more information is surfacing regarding the UNC basketball program’s schedule.

It was previously announced that North Carolina would once again compete in this year’s CBS Sports Classic. This event is designed to bring four of the nation’s most successful college basketball programs together for some competitive early-season action.

Although we knew the Tar Heels would once again be involved, their opponent was not originally announced. However, we now have some clarity as to who the Tar Heels will be matched up with.

Hubert Davis’ team will take on 2021 NCAA semifinalist UCLA in this year’s CBS Sports Classic. The game is scheduled for Saturday, December 18, 2021, with tip-off scheduled for 3 p.m. EST. It is still to be determined as to where this year’s event will take place.

North Carolina has had success in this event in the past. The Tar Heels’ 5-2 record in the annual event contests currently ranks as the best among the four competitors. Here are the overall records for the four programs in this tournament.

North Carolina: 5-2
Ohio State: 4-3
Kentucky: 3-4
UCLA: 2-5

Last season, the Roy Williams-led Tar Heels defeated Kentucky 75-63. Armando Bacot led the Tar Heels with 14 points and eight rebounds. UCLA will come into this year’s game looking to avenge last season’s 77-70 loss to Ohio State.

This is not the first time that these two squads have matched up in the CBS Sports Classic. In 2019, North Carolina defeated UCLA 74-64, as the Tar Heels paced their offense with five different players in double-figures.

For North Carolina, this will be a great early-season test. With a whole new look to this year’s roster, the Tar Heels will draw an opponent who is coming off a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. As North Carolina hopes to be among the nation’s best in 2021, what better way to test their talent than to battle against one of the top programs in the entire country.
