UNC Basketball: Seventh Woods enters transfer portal
The former UNC basketball guard has once again entered his name in the transfer portal.
In 2019, Seventh Woods decided it was in his best interest to enter the transfer portal. Woods appeared in 94 games as a Tar Heel, mostly in a reserve role, and was most likely looking for an opportunity elsewhere to earn more play time.
The Columbia, South Carolina native found a new home, as he decided to enroll at the University of South Carolina. Before he could appear in a game for the Gamecocks, Woods had to use a redshirt year for his first school year on campus.
After one season at South Carolina, Woods has decided to once again enter his name in the transfer portal once again. Due to the NCAA transfer rule, Woods will have one year of immediate eligibility left as a graduate transfer.
Unfortunately, Wood’s time at South Carolina did not go as planned. The injury bug hampered the former Tar Heel throughout his lone season with the program.
On the first day of the team’s summer workouts, Woods overexerted himself while during a weightlifting session. He spent some time in the hospital and was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a condition that, if not treated in a quick manner, can cause severe kidney damage or death.
In the team’s second regular season contest, Woods tweaked his knee, which forced the Gamecocks to limit his minutes early on. During the team’s final regular season contest at Kentucky, Woods suffered a torn groin, thus adding to his season long injury issues.
Overall, Woods appeared in 18 games (13 starts) for the Gamecocks. The redshirt senior averaged 5.4 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 19 minutes per game.
There is still a possibility that Woods could eventually stay at South Carolina. Players who enter the transfer portal are not forced to leave their current program, as they are allowed the opportunity to legally explore all of their options.
For Woods, it’s likely that he wasn’t expecting to last another season at the collegiate level. However, if he is looking to explore possible professional opportunities, it would be in his best interest to play another season at a NCAA program and prove that he’s not only healthy, but still can be an effective player.
