Former UNC basketball standout and NBA legend Michael Jordan has made his latest donation as part of the Jordan Brand “Black Community Commitment” program.

In June 2020, UNC basketball legend Michael Jordan announced that he was launching the “Black Community Commitment” program. In collaboration with Jordan Brand, the goal of this program was to donate $100 million dollars over the next 10 years to several organizations that support racial equality and social justice, as well as providing greater access to education.

On Friday, Jordan announced the latest donation as part of this philanthropic movement.

Jordan will be donating $1 million dollars to the Morehead College journalism and sports programs. According to reports, the donation will be used specifically for technology, scholarships, and educational programming for students who are studying journalism and sports-related studies.

Morehead College, which is based in Atlanta, is a private and historically African American liberal arts school. The program was originally launched with the help of a donation from alum Spike Lee.

Here’s what Jordan had to say in regards to his donation to Morehead College:

"“Education is crucial for understanding the Black experience today. We want to help people understand the truth of our past and help tell the stories that will shape our future.”"

Additionally, Monique Dozier, the vice president for institutional advancement at Morehouse College, released a statement regarding Jordan’s donation:

"“Morehouse is grateful to Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand for an investment in the education of talented men of color who will ensure there is equity, balance, and truth in the way sports stories are framed and the way the Black experience is contextualized within American history.”"

Michael Jordan continues to make an impact on the African American community, and this donation will help shape future generations who strive to work in the sports media field.
