The head coaching vacancy of the UNC basketball program is currently one of the hottest topics in all of sports.

As North Carolina looks to replace legendary head coach Roy Williams, there have been tons of rumors circulating as to who that successor may be. Some feel that the Tar Heels may “shoot for the stars” and try to attract one of the game’s top coaches. Others feel that the school will elect to “keep it within the family” and hire a head coach that has prior experience or connections to the university.

According to former Tar Heel Rick Fox, he thinks that North Carolina should keep it in-house. On Twitter, Fox endorsed two candidates that he feels would be excellent candidates for the job.

Fox believes that North Carolina should keep the hire within the family, as he is certain that the candidates available are more than qualified for the position. The former Tar Heels believes that one of his two former teammates, Hubert Davis or King Rice, should be tabbed as the program’s next head coach.

The trio has a fond connection, as they were not only teammates but roommates during their time in Chapel Hill during the late 1980s into the early 1990s. If anyone knows Davis and Rice well, it would be Fox.

Since their collegiate days, Davis and Rice have had rather different coaching paths. After a 12-year career in the NBA, Davis took his first coaching job in 2012 when he joined Roy Williams staff at North Carolina. This has been the only coaching position that Davis has held in his career, as he’s never been at the helm of a program.

Rice, on the other hand, has some head coaching experience under his belt. After stints as an assistant at Oregon, Illinois State, and Providence, Rice was tabbed as the head coach of Monmouth in 2011. He’s been the head coach of the program since, as he’s led the Hawks to three MAAC regular season championships in that span. King is also a three-time MAAC coach of the year recipient.

As North Carolina works on its search of a new head coach, it is expected that both Davis and King will be in the mix. According to Fox, the UNC basketball program can’t go wrong with hiring either of these two men.
