Two freshmen from the UNC basketball program have earned All-ACC Academic Team honors for the 2020-21 season.

The All-ACC Academic Team is designed to honor those student-athletes who have achieved success both on and off the court. In order to earn All-Academic honors, student-athletes must have achieved a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester, and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Additionally, the student’s athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered.

This week, the ACC announced this year’s All-Academic Team. Two freshmen from the UNC basketball program are featured on this year’s list.

Kerwin Walton and R.J. Davis were named to this year’s All-ACC Academic team. In their first year in Chapel Hill, the duo has found quick success on the basketball court, as well as in the virtual classroom.

Walton began the year as a role player for Roy Williams’ team, but was quickly inserted into the starting lineup. His ability to shoot the basketball has made Walton a valuable asset in the Tar Heels’ rotation. In 26 games played, Walton has averaged 8.1 points per game, and is shooting better than 40% from the floor overall.

Davis started the year as a starter, but has transitioned into more of a role player for this year’s Tar Heels squad. The freshman guard is averaging 8.2 points per game over his 26 appearances, and has seen playing time at both backcourt positions.

In a year that has been full of uncertainty, it’s refreshing to see that the duo of freshman guards has been able to maintain their academic success. We all know what they are capable of doing on the court, but this honor gives a glimpse of how they are focused on being well-rounded student-athletes as well.
