UNC Basketball: Tar Heels still in contact with 5-star
By Zack Pearson
The 2022 recruiting cycle is starting to heat up here in January and while there is a long way to go, the UNC Basketball program is making a few headlines with potential recruits on their board.
Earlier in the week we wrote on four-star guard Isaac McKneely and his recruitment with UNC having yet to offer. And today, we have some news on a big five-star target.
Class of 2022 five-star small forward Mark Mitchell received his offer from UNC back in July and has been a big target for the Tar Heels since. The 6-foot-8, 205-pound Mitchell has a total of 9 offers including from a few big programs in UNC, Kansas and UCLA.
But where does he stand in his recruitment?
Mark Zagoria of Zag’s Blog recently talked to Mitchell about his recruitment and where things stand right now. The recruit discussed the five teams that are contacting him the most, including North Carolina.
Here is what Mitchell Had to say:
"“I have a good relationship with coach [Steve] Robinson. We talk a lot. I talk to coach Roy [Williams] every now and then, too,” Mitchell said. “My mom is from North Carolina and obviously they’re a historic program. I watch them a lot.“They’re North Carolina, so of course they’re on TV a lot. I know a lot about the program, so I’m just going to keep feeling them out and building my relationship with coach Robinson and coach Williams.”"
That’s certainly good news for UNC fans as the Tar Heels continue to be in contact with the recruit and hopefully the pursuit ramps up even more as time goes on.
Mitchell is ranked as the No. 15 overall recruit, No. 5 small forward and No. 1 player in the state of Kansas per the 247 Sports recruiting rankings. He’s become an important recruit for the Tar Heels as they have a big need on the wing for future classes.
The prospect has been elevating his game lately including working on being a consistent shooter and scorer as Eric Bossi noted recently. We could see Mitchell jump in the rankings as time goes on and he could eventually get into the Top 10.
