UNC Football: Tar Heels add running back transfer
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Football program landed a big graduate transfer at the running back position on Tuesday afternoon as they look to replace two star backs
Going into 2021, the UNC Football program is going to have to find a way to replace the production of Javonte Williams and Michael Carter at the running back position. With both players leaving the program after the 2020 season, the Tar Heels had a tough task ahead of them.
But on Tuesday, they landed a commitment from a transfer running back to help fix that problem.
Former four-star 2017 recruit Ty Chandler announced his decision to transfer a few weeks ago from Tennessee. It didn’t take long for him to find a new home and on Tuesday, he announced he was transferring to North Carolina.
The 5-foot-11, 205 Chandler made his decision to use his last year of eligibility as a grad transfer and commit to North Carolina, a program with an opening at running back. Chandler is coming off a season in which he rushed for 456 yards on 100 attempts and 4 touchdowns.
In four seasons at Tennessee, Chandler racked up 2,511 all-purpose yards for the Volunteers as a legit threat out of their backfield.
This is a big get for the Tar Heels as they lost the production of Williams and Carter. Going into the year it was expected that British Brooks, Josh Henderson and D.J. Jones would battle for the top spot. But now we can add Chandler to the mix as he’s expected to be the front-runner to take the lead back role.
Chandler also returned kicks for the Volunteers and could have a role doing that as well for the Tar Heels. The addition of Chandler does not add to the Tar Heels 2022 class in terms of scholarships.
