The UNC football program will now be without their two leading rushers for their upcoming bowl game.

On Saturday afternoon, Javonte Williams announced on Instagram that he will declare for the NFL Draft. The junior running back also made the decision to sit out of the Tar Heels Orange Bowl matchup against Texas A&M.

Williams becomes the fourth Tar Heel to elect to sit out the team’s upcoming bowl game. He joins Dyami Brown, Michael Carter and Chazz Surratt as the Tar Heels who will not take the field with the UNC football program on January 2nd.

After a stellar junior season, Williams’ decision shouldn’t be that much of a surprise to anyone.

The Wallace, N.C native rushed for 1,140 yards, and added an additional 305 receiving yards to his overall total. He was among the nation’s best in finding the end zone, as his 22 total touchdowns ranked second-most throughout college football.

Overall, Williams rushed for 2,279 career rushing yards and 29 touchdowns. Combined with his 539 receiving yards and four additional scores, Williams ended his Tar Heels career with 2,818 total yards of offense and 33 touchdowns.

The duo of Carter and Williams developed into one of (if not the) most lethal running back duos in the entire country. Mack Brown’s team was driven by the running game, and the performances of his two featured backs played a major role in the team’s overall success during their tenure in Chapel Hill.

Williams will now his attention to the NFL, as he will prepare for the 2021 draft. According to ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr., we might not have to wait long to hear Williams’ name on draft night.

Kiper Jr. currently ranks Williams as the No. 3 running back on his latest big board. Based on recent mock drafts, Williams is a player who is viewed as a second or even early-third round pick in this year’s draft class.

Javonte Williams had a tremendous collegiate career. Now it is time for the talented running back to test his luck at the next level.
