A top UNC Basketball recruiting target in the 2021 class has hinted at when he will eventually make his decision. But where do the Tar Heels stand?

The race to land five-star 2021 recruit Chet Holmgren continues as the UNC Basketball program is still hopeful that they can land one of the top players in this upcoming class.

The 7-foot Holmgren is ranked as the No. 2 overall prospect, No. 1 center and No. 1 player in the state of Minnesota per the 247 Sports Composite rankings. And he’s really in the discussion for being the top player as he’s a unique talent that doesn’t come around often.

Holmgren has a total of 30 offers in his recruitment but has recently narrowed his list down to seven programs: North Carolina, Ohio State, Gonzaga, Memphis, Georgetown, Michigan and Minnesota. With those teams involved, Holmgren has only visited two programs (Gonzaga and Ohio State) for officials but has also been on Minnesota’s campus.

While COVID-19 restrictions imposed by the NCAA have made it difficult for Holmgren to visit other campuses. That restriction lasts until the end of the calendar year and it could push Holmgren to decide in the spring.

Holmgren recently talked to Jake Weingarten of StockRiser’s over the weekend to get the latest on his recruitment. The recruit shared that not only would he like to take visits if possible but he can see Spring as a timeline for a recruitment. Here is what he told Weingarten in the interview:

"“So much can change so fast so I am in no rush to commit and I will try to take my visits if allowed by the NCAA. As well as seeing what happens with other commitments and transfers before committing so I’ll probably commit around early spring of 2021.”"

Not getting Holmgren on UNC’s campus might hurt their chances a bit and right now it sounds like the team to beat in this recruitment might be Gonzaga. As the weeks have gone on, Gonzaga has emerged as a favorite to land this top talent for their class. It makes sense as Holmgren has been on the Zags’ campus and everything is hinting to that matchup.

But don’t count the Tar Heels out just yet. There’s still some time in this recruitment and UNC could make up some ground especially if they get him on campus next year.
