UNC Football: Tar Heels fall in latest Associated Press Top 25
The UNC football program falls one spot in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll despite beating 23rd-ranked NC State by 27 points.
The North Carolina Tar Heels fell one spot in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll, from 14th to 15th, despite blowing out the 23rd-ranked NC State Wolfpack by 27 points on Saturday.
The Clemson Tigers remain undefeated this season, and kept their top spot in the poll this week after a slow start against the Syracuse Orange that resulted in a 26-point victory. Alabama beat Tennessee by 31 points in Knoxville, and comes in at second this week. Ohio State played its first game of the season on Saturday, beating Big 10 foe Nebraska by a final score of 52-17. Notre Dame dropped one spot to fourth this week despite a 42-point blowout of the Pittsburgh Panthers. The 3-1 Georgia Bulldogs fell one spot to fifth on their bye week.
Undefeated Oklahoma State stood pat at No. 6 after a big win over conference rival Iowa State, while the 4-0 Cincinnati Bearcats moved up a couple of spots to No. 7. Texas A&M is eighth after a 28-14 victory over Mississippi State, and ninth-ranked Wisconsin moved up five spots after a 45-7 win over Illinois. The Florida Gators, whose game against the LSU Tigers this week was postponed, remain at No. 10. BYU, Miami, Michigan and Oregon are ranked 11th through 14th.
It seems somewhat odd that the Tar Heels trail three Big 10 teams that have played just one game, and an Oregon squad that is yet to play its first game, after a convincing road win over a top-25 opponent. They’re also just three spots ahead of a Penn State team that lost its first and only game of the season to a formerly unranked Indiana Hoosiers squad.
The 4-1 Tar Heels will face off with the 1-4 Virginia Cavaliers at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville on Saturday night.
