The UNC Football program blows out NC State on Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill to get back to their winning ways

This was some response from the UNC Football program in Week 8 following their first loss of the season to Florida State a week ago.

It was just the third time in history that both UNC and N.C. State were ranked in the Top 25 for their matchup but this season’s game went pretty similar to last year — a blowout victory.

The Tar Heels were able to dominate on offense, including the rushing attack as they finished with 580 total yards and 328 on the ground. UNC went right at the Wolfpack defense early and often in this one, jumping out to an early 14-0 lead on touchdowns by Michael Carter on a 16-yard run and then a Sam Howell 10-yard touchdown run.

While N.C. State cut the lead down to 14-7 with a 42-yard touchdown pass by true freshman Ben Finley with 54 seconds left in the second quarter, they never got closer. UNC added a field goal right before the half to extend the lead to 17-7 and then flat out dominated in the second half.

The Tar Heels outscored the Wolfpack 31-14 in the second half, cruising to an easy victory for the second-straight year.

Javonte Williams rushed for three touchdowns in the second half, Howell add a touchdown pass to freshman Josh Downs and kicker Grayson Atkins added a field goal to end the scoring. Overall, it was a dominant performance for the Tar Heels and came at a good time. The win moved UNC to 4-1 on the year and helps them keep pace with both Clemson, Miami and Notre Dame in the ACC standings.

The Wolfpack would add a touchdown run by starter Baily Hockman and then a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter by Hockman. Other than that, the final two quarters were dominated by UNC.

Howell quietly had a nice game, completing 18 of his 29 attempts for 252 yards, a touchdown and zero interceptions. He was replaced by freshman Jacolby Crisswell in the fourth quarter. Williams finished with 160 yards on 19 attempts and a touchdown in the game while Carter finished with 106 yards on 17 carries and the touchdown.

Next up for UNC is a trip to Virginia on Halloween night as they will kickoff with the Cavaliers in primetime.
