Will the redshirt freshman be ready to play in UNC Basketball’s season opener against Charleston on November 25th?

We are just over 30 days away from the start of the UNC basketball season and the status of Anthony Harris is still up in the air.

After missing the start of the 2019-2020 season due to injury, Harris was limited to just five games during his true freshman season. He suffered a torn right ACL against Yale on December 30, and had season-ending surgery a few days later.

The Tar Heels expect to have Harris at some point this season. However, the redshirt freshman may not be ready for opening night.

On Wednesday, the UNC Basketball program held their annual media day festivities. The media had the opportunity to speak to Williams along with some players, such as Garrison Brooks, Leaky Black and Andrew Platek.

One of the topics discussed with Williams was the health of Harris. Williams told the media that the standout guard has not been released for contact practices or five-on-five drills.

With just over 30 days until tip-off, it may be a long-shot for Harris to suit up on opening night. Based on Williams’ quotes, it appears as if he is still has some hurdles in his rehab process before he can fully get back on the court.

Regardless of when he is able to return, the Tar Heels will be excited to have him back on the floor. Over the five games he played last season, Harris was a true spark off the bench, averaging 6.8 points-per-game while playing just over 12 minutes per-contest. Once he returns, it should be expected that he will play a significant role in Williams’ rotation.
