ANNAPOLIS, MD – DECEMBER 27: Quarterback Sam Howell #7 of the North Carolina Tar Heels drops back to throw a pass in the first half against the Temple Owls in the Military Bowl Presented by Northrop Grumman at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on December 27, 2019 in Annapolis, Maryland. Sam Howell

Yes, Sam Howell had a pretty brutal pick-6 near the end of the second quarter, but the sophomore signal caller really stepped it up in the second half.

Overall, Howell ended up completing 20 of his 36 passes for 374 yards. Early on, it didn’t seem like Howell would have huge numbers, considering the fact that the Tar Heels offense heavily relied on the run game in the first half.

Once the Tar Heels faced a huge deficit, offensive coordinator Phil Longo started having Howell air it out a bit, and for the most part, it paid off. All three of Howell’s touchdown passes came in the second half, and the Tar Heels offense seemed to flow smoother in the game’s final two quarters.

After a stellar freshman year, I think we all expect the Tar Heels to let Howell throw the ball a bit more in his second season as the team’s starting quarterback. Of course, the run game is vital to their success, but Howell’s role in the passing game is just as important moving forward.

Well, it didn’t turn out the way the UNC Football program hoped it would. Hopefully next week we’ll be able to give out helmet stickers after a Tar Heels victory over N.C. State!
