A top UNC Basketball five-star recruiting target in the 2021 class has officially cut his list to a final four on Wednesday afternoon

Five-star forward Caleb Houstan is one of the more sought-after recruits in the 2021 class after making the decision to reclassify from 2022. The UNC Basketball program has been in pursuit of Houstan for months now and were seemingly in good shape.

Then Wednesday happened.

Houstan officially cut his list of 10 programs down to four finalists as he took the next step in his recruitment and the North Carolina Tar Heels were not among that list. Instead, their Blue Blood rivals Duke as well as Alabama, Michigan and Virginia made the list.

Houstan’s final four is a little shocking, especially to UNC fans. As his recruitment went on this Summer, the talk was that the Tar Heels were gaining ground and were heavily involved with Houstan, potentially being a favorite here down the stretch. But as you see above, the Tar Heels are not in Houstan’s plans.

The Florida native out of Montverde Academy is ranked as a five-star prospect and the No. 8 overall prospect in the 247 Sports recruiting rankings. He’s a legit wing that can score from anywhere on the court and will be a big addition to the program he chooses. For UNC’s sake, let’s just hope it’s not Duke.

With Houstan’s decision, it leaves some wondering what the impact will be on top recruit Patrick Baldwin, also a forward. Both UNC and Duke are after him, and now we have to wonder what will happen if Houstan indeed does pick Duke. Neither appear to be close to a decision, so this could be something to monitor in the next few months.

As Houston is off the board, the Tar Heels’ 2021 targets are slowly dwindling. Their biggest targets are four-star forward Trey Kauffman and five-star guard Hunter Sallis, two recruits they would love to add to the class. However, neither are firmly solid on UNC and are still up in the air.
