UNC Baseball: Zac Gallen impresses in final start of 2020 regular season
The former Tar Heel caps off an impressive 2020 regular season with a standout performance in his final start.
In his first full season with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Zac Gallen has solidified himself as a starting rotation option for the club moving forward.
As the Diamondbacks will wrap up their season this weekend, Gallen had one last opportunity to take the mound in 2020. The former Tar Heel definitely made the most of his final regular season outing.
In the first game of a doubleheader against the Colorado Rockies, Gallen tossed a gem. Over six innings of work, the right-hander allowed no runs on five hits while striking out 10 Rockies hitters. The Diamondbacks went on to win the ballgame 4-0 in a shortened seven-inning contest.
Over 12 starts this season, Gallen posted a 3-2 record with a 2.75 ERA. The former Tar Heel allowed just 22 earned runs over 72 innings of work, and struck out an impressive 82 hitters over that span.
The 25-year-old set a Major League record for the most consecutive starts without allowing three or more runs, and even has been considered to be in the National League CY Young Award discussion.
The Diamondbacks had a tough 2020 season, but Gallen definitely serves as a bright spot for the franchise moving forward. Ever since he was acquired in a mid-season trade back in 2019, Gallen has served as a reliable arm every fifth day in the starting rotation. As the Diamondbacks organization looks to get back into contention in 2021, Gallen should be a huge factor in regards to their future plans.
