After having no fans in the seats for the season opener against Syracuse, the UNC football program will have a limited number of spectators for its next home game.

Kenan Memorial Stadium was quiet as the Tar Heels picked up a 31-6 victory over Syracuse in their season opener. However, it appears as if there won’t be a completely empty stadium for long.

On Tuesday, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper announced that venues with seating capacities of over 10,000 people would be able to open at seven percent capacity. This will become effective starting on October 2.

Kenan Memorial Stadium typically holds 62,980 seats, so the Tar Heels will be allowed to seat just under 3,600 fans at their next home game. With North Carolina playing on the road against Boston College on October 3, the program will not play a home game until the following week against Virginia Tech (October 10).

Although it is a small number of people, this is definitely a step in the right direction. With the health and safety of everyone involved in mind, the state of North Carolina is working diligently to ease back into what we typically knew as the “normal” way of life.

Here is what North Carolina Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham had to say regarding the governor’s ruling:

For the time being, a limited number of fans will have to do. Hopefully over time this number will increase to allow more people the opportunity to see the Tar Heels live in action this season.
