UNC Basketball: Michael Jordan purchases NASCAR Cup Series Charter
Former Tar Heel and NBA legend Michael Jordanannounces a new NASCAR Cup Series Team for the 2021 series season.
As we all know, Michael Jordan is a very competitive human being. On Monday evening, it was announced that the 57-year-old is set to take on a new competitive challenge in 2021.
And that challenge is in the world of NASCAR.
NASCAR announced that Jordan has purchased a single-car Cup Series Charter for the 2021 series. Jordan will co-own the team with NASCAR Cup Series Driver Denny Hamlin, and has tabbed Bubba Wallace as the driver for ‘His Airness,’ the racecar that will represent the brand.
With the purchase of the charter from Germain Racing, Jordan becomes the first African American to be a majority owner of a full-time race team since the early 1970s. Wallace, who is currently the only African American driver in NASCAR, has found a new home after he recently left Richard Petty Motorsports.
The pairing of Jordan and Hamlin makes sense given their current relationship. The two are very close friends, as Hamlin has long been associated with the Jordan Brand.
Jordan is no stranger to having an ownership role in professional sports. The former Tar Heel is currently the majority owner of the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets, and now can add his new NASCAR Cup Series team to his resume.
If you are into racing, you may have a new team to support in 2021. If you haven’t necessarily followed NASCAR in the past, you now have a very valid reason to do so!
