A former Tar Heel standout is currently battling to keep his job as the Chicago Bears’ starting quarterback.

After posting a 12-4 regular season record in 2018, there were very high hopes for the Chicago Bears heading into the 2019 season. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned for the Bears last season. They finished the season with an 8-8 record, and ultimately missed the playoffs.

Looking to get back on track in 2020, the Bears made a handful of roster moves this offseason. One of the biggest moves they made was bringing in veteran quarterback Nick Foles. The eight-year veteran was brought in to compete for the starting quarterback job with former Tar Heel Mitchell Trubisky. Heading into his fourth NFL season, Trubisky will have to earn the starting role.

Over his three professional seasons, Trubisky has definitely seen his share of ups and downs. In 2018, his second year in the NFL, the former Tar Heel made the Pro Bowl. At that point, it looked as if the Bears made the right decision in drafting him.

However, the 2019 campaign didn’t go as planned. The Bears offense struggled, and Trubisky’s numbers as a whole took a hit. Although he didn’t throw as many interceptions, Trubisky also threw for fewer yards and touchdown passes than the year prior.

As we’re just under two weeks away from the start of the NFL season, the Bears’ quarterback competition is still ongoing. According to head coach Matt Nagy, fans shoudn’t expect a decision on the starter until Week 1.

As training camp progresses, the Bears appear content with letting this competition play out. Without preseason games, it definitely plays a factor in how this competition will shape up. It is worth noting, however, that some of Trubisky’s teammates have been impressed with the fourth-year signal-caller this training camp.

Training camp battles are always fun to keep an eye out for, and the one that’s brewing in Chicago is one of the biggest competitions throughout the NFL. We’ll soon see if Trubisky can hold on to his starting role with the Chicago Bears.
